Sándor Petőfi’s poem recited by poets of the Turkic World
The Day of the Independence of Hungary was celebrated in an event organised in Lakitelek and gathering poets from different countries of the Turkic World who recited the poem "Freedom and Love" by the famous Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi in 7 languages.
The event, which was held in front of the statue of Sándor Petőfi, one of the leaders of this struggle for independence, within the framework of the events celebrating the Hungarian Revolution of 15 March 1848, known as the beginning of the Hungarian nation's independence movement, was attended by TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev and poets from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan who won the first prize in the International Competition of Poetry Translation dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Sándor Petőfi.
The event started with a poetry reading and traditional dance performance by Hungarian students.
TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev who delivered a speech at the event first paid tribute to the heroes who lost lives for the independence of Hungary and expressed his pleasure "to be attending this event organized on the anniversary of the struggle for independence of our Hungarian brothers and sisters".
Noting that TURKSOY and the Lakitelek Foundation of Hungary organised a poetry translation contest in honour of the great poet and patriot Sándor Petőfi, Sultan Raev said that in this contest, which took place with the participation of hundreds of poets from the Turkic World, around four hundred of Petőfi's poems were translated into various Turkic dialects to introduce Petőfi's patriotism and sacrifice to the entire Turkic World.
Secretary General Raev also announced that the poems compiled within the framework of the competition will be published in a book to be dedicated to the great poet Petőfi and said: "The hero of freedom of our Hungarian brothers, who are our ancient relatives, is undoubtedly of great importance for the Turkic World. I would like to reiterate once again our justified pride at TURKSOY to be involved in a work that will convey the legacy of such a distinguished poet to future Hungarian and Turkic generations."
The Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Sándor Lezsák who also delivered a speech at the event stated that more than 500 poets of the Turkic World participated in the Sándor Petőfi International Competition of Poetry Translation organised by TURKSOY in cooperation with the Lakitelek Foundation and translated Petőfi's poems into their own languages. Sándor Lezsák concluded his speech thanking TURKSOY for its successful work.
At the event, Sándor Petőfi's poem "Freedom and Love" was read first in Hungarian and then in 7 different languages by the poets who won the first prize in the poetry competition; Ramil Ehmed and Baris Javid Mövsumlü from Azerbaijan, Dauren Berikqazhyuly from Kazakhstan, Toluk Bek Baizak from Kyrgyzstan, Rustam Musurmon from Uzbekistan, Dursun Ayan from Turkey and Akmyrat Rejebow from Turkmenistan.
